Family Planning Q&A

What is included in family planning?

Family planning is an area of practice that gives women the power to make decisions about how to plan for parenthood, including how to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Birth control is the primary service within family planning, but women also receive guidance on other issues related to reproduction.

For some, learning how to prepare their bodies for the rigors of pregnancy and childbirth is a primary focus. Others want to explore how much time between pregnancies offers the best fit for their goals. No matter where you are in life or what your goals are regarding motherhood, family planning services are an essential part of women’s health.

What kinds of birth control are available?

Never before have there been so many outstanding options for women who want to prevent unwanted pregnancies. You have choices that were simply unimaginable just a few generations back.

Birth control can be loosely categorized into two types: barrier and hormonal methods.

Barrier birth control

These methods prevent pregnancy by creating a physical barrier between egg and sperm. Options include:

  • Internal and external condoms
  • Cervical caps
  • Diaphragms
  • Sponges

You can add additional protection to any of these methods by using spermicide.

Hormonal birth control

These methods prevent pregnancy by preventing normal ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, or otherwise creating an environment that is inhospitable to fertilization. Options include:

  • Pills
  • Patches
  • Vaginal rings
  • Injections (Depo-Provera®)
  • Implants (Nexplanon®)
  • Intrauterine devices (IUD) including Mirena®, Liletta®, and Paragard®

Women who are certain they do not want to become pregnant can also choose tubal ligation, a surgical procedure sometimes referred to as sterilization.

How can family planning assist me on my journey to motherhood?
