Kybella Q&A

How does Kybella work?

Kybella® contains a synthetic version of an active ingredient called deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella® destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

How can Kybella benefit me?

Kybella® destroys fat cells beneath the skin, resulting in a slimmer facial profile and is FDA approved for people aged 19 and older to destroy fat cells under the chin, thereby eliminating what is commonly called “double-chin”.

What can I expect from a Kybella session?

You’ll be asked to go into the office for an initial consultation, which is meant to determine suitability by assessing history of prior facial treatments or surgeries for medical or cosmetic purposes, prior medical conditions in or around the neck or chin, issues with swallowing, bleeding issues, pregnancy status or if you’re breast feeding, and if you’re taking any medications (especially blood thinners). Additionally, the person delivering the injections will disclose potential Kybella® side effects after treatment which can include nerve injury in the jaw (which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness), trouble swallowing, injection site problems such as bruising, hair loss, open sores (ulcers), damage and tissue cell-death. The most common side effects include swelling, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area.

Kybella® is administered as a series of injections to the treatment area under the chin, destroying fat cells and producing gradual results. Injection sites can be numbed with ice packs or an anesthetic cream but generally require no anesthetic.

One treatment session (involving multiple small injections) usually lasts 20 minutes. The exact number of sessions/injections will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile. Each session is given at least 1 month apart, and you should not receive more than 6 treatment sessions.
